Progress on the first project

After felting the swatches and determining the desired size of the finished bag, students cast-on the number of stitches needed to get the proper width of the bag and began knitting the rectangles. Calculating the percentage of shrinkage in length after felting will let them know when to stop. For example, if your 4" swatch shrinks down to 3" in length you've lost 25% of your length to felting and should therefore knit the rectangle to be 25% longer than the total length required for this envelope style bag.

Knitting for the bags is progressing nicely for Liz. Lynn and Erin are already seaming their rectangles to create the bag shape.

This project is a bit of a new experience for me because I haven't knit anything without a pattern before (other than scarves). The only other time I made a felted project, I had a very specific pattern and didn't have to do any calculations about the size of the project before felting. I'm enjoying having the freedom to make the bag what I want it to be.

I have never knitted before, but feel like I have learned fast. I feel a little rushed through the first project, but I think it will get better as I go along. The bag is a cool project, but I think I'll enjoy making the hat and mittens more.

Knitting this project has been very fun so far. I have knit a pair of slippers before and the knitting stitch has come back to me, but the purling was a little more of a challenge but becoming easier as I go along. I have enjoyed watching my ball of yarn turn into the purse to be. I can't wait to see everyone's finished product.

I have only knitted a few scarfs before, so this project was a little different for me. IT went pretty well. I just finished felting it. I was a little scared at first that it wouldn't felt becasue the machine locked my bag in the washer for a good ten minutes before i unplugged it and got it out. I'm glad we didn't really have a pattern, so we were able to make it how we wanted it to be! It was fun, and it really got me into knitting more!

Since, I had never knit before, I thought this project was pretty easy, after I figured out how to knit. The only problem I had with this project was making the i-cord. The problem I had was with pulling it tight on the first, two stitches. Otherwise I thought the project went quite well.

The first project is pretty cool as an introduction to knitting. I found it a lot of fun. I think the i core is the hard part especially when I try to do it in my circular needle. I think a bamboo needle will help to hold it and tight it easier, at least it's not easy to slide of. I like this first project!

I was sewing my button on to my bag this morning, and I was surprised that my bag was still wet from felting yesterday morning. I didn't expect it to dry so slowly.

I've enjoyed learning how to knit while doing this first project. I like the way my bag turned out. The concept of felting was very interesting to me. However, I think the hat and mittens will be more useful to me.

I was amazed at how much the felting helped my bag. It really hid all of my mistakes so that my first project wasn't a complete loss.
